How to clean your oven without the fumes.
Commercial oven cleaners work but fill the kitchen with fumes you then bake into your food. A baking soda paste left overnight does the same job with nothing harsh.
Clean an oven naturally by coating the interior with a thick baking soda and water paste, letting it sit overnight, then wiping it out and spraying any residue with vinegar to foam away the last of the grime. Remove and soak the racks separately. No fumes, no harsh chemicals.
Coat it in baking soda paste
Baking soda plus water makes a mild abrasive paste that breaks down baked-on grease with time instead of chemicals.
- Remove the racks and set them to soak
- Mix about half a cup of baking soda with water into a spreadable paste
- Coat the entire interior, avoiding the heating elements
- Let it sit overnight, at least 12 hours
Wipe and foam with vinegar
The next day the loosened grime wipes out, and vinegar handles whatever is left.
- Wipe out the dried paste with a damp cloth
- Spray remaining residue with white vinegar — it foams as it reacts
- Wipe again until clean; repeat on stubborn spots
Don't forget the racks
Oven racks soak while the interior works.
- Soak racks in hot water with dish soap or a baking soda bath
- Scrub with a non-scratch pad and rinse
- Dry fully before sliding them back in
