How to clean and freshen a mattress.
You spend a third of your life on your mattress, and it collects sweat, dead skin and dust mites. A twice-a-year refresh keeps it healthier and is simpler than it sounds.
Clean a mattress by vacuuming the whole surface, spot-treating stains with a little enzyme cleaner or a baking soda paste, then sieving a thick layer of baking soda over the entire mattress and letting it sit for several hours to absorb moisture and odor before vacuuming it all up. Do this every six months and always let it fully dry.
Vacuum the surface
Start by removing the surface debris, dust and dead skin.
- Strip the bed and vacuum the entire mattress with the upholstery tool
- Get into the seams and crevices where dust mites gather
Spot-treat stains
Treat stains before the deodorizing step. The type of stain matters.
- For sweat and body stains, an enzyme cleaner works best
- For fresh spills, blot, then a baking soda paste
- Never soak a mattress — blot and use minimal moisture
Deodorize with baking soda
Baking soda pulls out moisture and odor with no chemicals.
- Sieve a generous, even layer of baking soda over the whole mattress
- Let it sit several hours, longer is better
- Vacuum it all up thoroughly
- Flip or rotate the mattress while you are at it
