How to clear glass shower doors of hard water.
The cloudy film on shower glass is hard-water mineral deposits and soap scum bonded together. It needs an acid to dissolve the minerals, not just more scrubbing.
Remove hard water spots from glass shower doors with a paste of baking soda and vinegar, or undiluted white vinegar warmed slightly, applied and left to dwell 10 to 15 minutes, then scrubbed and rinsed. Prevent it from coming back by squeegeeing the glass after every shower, which is the single most effective habit.
Dissolve the minerals
Hard-water film is mineral, so an acid is what breaks it down.
- Warm white vinegar slightly and spray it on, or soak paper towels and press them to the glass
- Let it dwell 10-15 minutes so it can work
- For heavy buildup, scrub with a baking soda paste, which adds gentle abrasion
Scrub and rinse
After the acid has done the work, light scrubbing finishes it.
- Scrub with a non-scratch pad or microfiber
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water
- Dry and buff with a clean cloth for a streak-free finish
Keep it clear
Clear glass is a maintenance habit, not a one-time clean.
- Keep a squeegee in the shower and use it after every use
- A quick daily spray of a vinegar-water mix prevents buildup
- Crack the door or run the fan to dry the enclosure
