The complete house cleaning checklist.

A good checklist turns cleaning from a vague chore into a finite list you can actually finish. This is the room-by-room list a professional works through, so nothing gets missed.

A complete house cleaning checklist works room by room, top to bottom: dust high surfaces first, then wipe mid-level surfaces, sanitize kitchens and bathrooms, and finish with floors so debris falls onto areas not yet cleaned. Run it weekly for maintenance, and fold in monthly tasks like baseboards, inside appliances and light fixtures on a rotation.

Kitchen

  • Wipe counters, backsplash and appliance fronts
  • Clean the stovetop and inside the microwave
  • Scrub and shine the sink; run the disposal
  • Wipe cabinet fronts near the stove
  • Sweep and mop the floor
  • Empty the trash and wipe the bin lid

Bathrooms

  • Scrub and sanitize the toilet, tub, shower and sink
  • Polish mirrors and chrome
  • Wipe counters and disinfect high-touch handles
  • Empty trash and replace towels
  • Sweep and mop the floor

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Change or straighten bedding
  • Dust all surfaces, sills and electronics
  • Tidy and put items back in place
  • Vacuum carpets and rugs
  • Vacuum upholstery and under cushions periodically

Whole-home, top to bottom

  • Dust high: fans, light fixtures, shelves
  • Wipe mid: tables, counters, handles, switch plates
  • Spot-clean walls and doors
  • Floors last: vacuum, then mop

Work into the month

  • Baseboards and door frames
  • Inside the refrigerator and oven
  • Window sills, blinds and interior glass
  • Ceiling fans and vent covers
